Campaign To Restore Building Housing Three Historical Anarchist Spaces

Montreal’s longest-standing anarchist space, home to the L’Insoumise bookstore, the DIRA library, and the self-managed social center Les Révoltes, urgently needs our help. After decades of holding space for anarchist communities, the building now faces over $200,000 in critical repairs. They’ve been a pillar for the anarchist scene, now they need the scene to have their back.

To help them reach their campaign’s objective, we built and hosted a website to launch their crowdfunding campaign last year. Through this fundraiser and other benefit events, the campaign has been able to reach $23,000 in donations.

No Gods No Masters has donated $1,200 so far to support them, but the gap is still massive. That’s why this message is hitting the inboxes of all 91,000 of our subscribers – throw whatever you can. Every dollar matters.

100% of the money is going directly to the fundraiser:
‣ Zero payment processing fees. Donations run through Zeffy, which takes no commission.
‣ Zero hosting fees. We cover the infrastructure.

We’ve backed our comrades from L’Insoumise and the AEELI since day one – free or discounted shirts at production cost, free Pirate-Punk compilations, you name it. It was among our first donations after launching the shop. And we’re extending this collaboration in the near future by providing resources for revamped websites and more!

Since 1982, 2033-2035 Saint-Laurent Boulevard has been a vital space for anarchism in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang). At that time, activists founded the Association des Espèces d’Espaces Libres et Imaginaires (AEELI) with the goal of acquiring the building that today houses three anarchist projects: the feminist and queer self-managed social space Les Révoltes, the DIRA library and the bookstore L’Insoumise. The AEELI’s mission is to spread anarchist ideas, for example through the development of an anarchist bookstore in Montreal. When the association was founded, the bookstore was named Librairie l’Alternative, which opened its doors in 1973. L’Insoumise took over the mantle of l’Alternative twenty years ago. Founded in 2004, the bookstore is open to the public six days a week. And since 2005, the DIRA library has occupied the building’s third floor.

There are many communities that frequent this mythical anarchist building. Every year, people from all over visit both the bookstore and the library. These spaces are greatly used by anarchists: activities, screenings, celebrations, and parties are regularly organized there.
